Sensitivity of Sea Ice Growth to Snow Properties in Opposing Regions of the Weddell Sea in Late Summer

نویسندگان

چکیده

The sensitivity of sea ice to the contrasting seasonal and perennial snow properties in southeastern northwestern Weddell Sea is not yet considered model satellite remote sensing applications. However, analysis physical snowpack late summer recent years reveals a high fraction melt-freeze forms resulting significant higher densities than eastern Sea. lower thermal conductivity snowpack, which only half what has been previously assumed models Sea, reduces bottom growth by 18 cm during winter. In northwest, however, potentially formed thickness 22 at snow/ice interface contributes additional 7 thermodynamic bottom. This study emphasizes enormous impact unappreciated regional differences on growth.

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Albedo of summer snow on sea ice, Ross Sea, Antarctica

[1] Surface all-wave albedo and physical parameters (grain radius, mass density, surface temperature, and stratification) of an austral summer snow cover on sea ice were measured in the Ross Sea during January-February 1999. It was observed that (1) from north to south the snow surface temperature decreases, albedo increases, snow mass density decreases, snow composite grain radius decreases, a...

Temporal evolution of decaying summer first-year sea ice in the Western Weddell Sea, Antarctica

The evolution of the main physico-chemical properties of the unflooded 90-cm-thick first-year sea-ice cover at the Ice Station POLarstern (ISPOL) ‘‘clean site’’ is described. ISPOL was an international experiment of the German research icebreaker R.V. Polarstern. The vessel was anchored to an ice floe for an observation period of 5 weeks, during the early summer melt onset in the Western Weddel...

Short-term biogenic particle flux under late spring sea ice in the western Weddell Sea

In the framework of the ‘‘Ice Station POLarstern’’ (ISPOL) expedition in the western Weddell Sea, two sediment traps were deployed at 10 and 70m water depth under a drifting ice floe in December 2004. The amount and composition of the vertical particle flux under sea ice were determined during a period of 30 days in order to investigate the influence of biological processes in sea ice and on it...
